Massa
The Massa’s Branch of IFC was established in 1998 at the former Apuan Pediatric Hospital (OPA), when IFC was recognized by the Ministry of Health as a Research Centre for the Provision of Health Activities (CREAS), with DM 26/06/1993. The existing pediatric cardiac surgery is accompanied by the one devoted to adult patients; at the time, ample space was given to research as well as to the clinic, while the hospital name was changed to Apuan "G. Pasquinucci" Hospital.
From 1 November 2007, The Tuscany "G. Monasterio" Foundation (FTGM) hired the ownership of the healthcare and the researches of main interest for the Regional Health System, previously performed by CREAS IFC-CNR, both at Massa and in Pisa-San Cataldo CNR Research Area; the research activities related to techno-sciences, genetics, epidemiology and flow cytometry applied to the study of cardiovascular disease have been retained by IFC.
Research Activities
The research activities at IFC-CNR Massa are very diversified and include:
1. Biomaterials
The “Laboratory for Biomaterials” was born over to develop and characterize polymeric biomaterials and biomedical devices for cardiovascular applications. The most studied devices at the laboratory are cardiac valves, small-diameter vascular grafts and scaffolds for skin wound healing. The polymeric devices are fabricated through innovative technologies including spray, phase-inversion technology, electrospinning and 3D printing.
Within projects concerning innovative biocompatible materials and tissue engineering, the laboratory has gained experience in the culture of cell lines and in the isolation of human primary cells.
Currently the main activities concern the design and fabrication of bioactive materials for tissue regeneration and for local administration of drugs and bioactive agents in cardiovascular, osteo-articular and wound healing field. The research is carried on within national and international projects and collaborations with public institutions and biomedical companies.
2. Congenital heart diseases
The scientific activities are carried out in collaboration with the pediatric cardiology/GUCH unit and pediatric cardiac surgery of FTGM (Tuscan tertiary center for the diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart disease from prenatal diagnosis to adulthood).
The research focuses on non-invasive evaluation in particular by means of cardiac magnetic resonance applied to congenital heart disease and acquired heart disease in pediatric age. A study on 3D models for the planning of intervention in complex congenital heart disease is ongoing.
Another study, during the last years, focalize on the usefulness of lung ultrasound in the evaluation of post-op pulmonary complications (the main causes of morbidity in intensive care) after pediatric cardiac surgery.
3. Leuco-platelet pathophysiology
The research activities concern the cytofluorimetric evaluation of phenotypic and functional aspects of leukocytes and platelets of the peripheral blood of patients subjected to extracorporeal circulation by cardiac surgery (Project MINI-SEVO in collaboration with FTGM) and study of the phenotype of circulating monocytes, in the experimental model of pig (European ARTreat Project) and in clinical studies (SMARTool European Project, in collaboration with FTGM), in the progression of atherosclerotic disease.
Moreover, in collaboration with FTGM, other two studies are ongoing regards the phenotypic analyzes on thrombus aspirates and coronary circulation blood of patients with acute myocardial infarction, and correlation studies between the phenotype of circulating monocytes and coronary calcification level (Calcium score) in asymptomatic subjects aged 45 years (MHELP study).
4. Epidemiology and Biostatistics
The research activities in the field of Epidemiology and Biostatistics are oriented to develop innovative biostatistical and epidemiological methods; to the design and statistical analysis of health surveys on current information flows, clinical trials, clinical and observational studies, through the application of advanced statistical methods.
The methodological research activity mainly concerns the development of statistical methods for spatio-temporal epidemiological surveillance and monitoring of the frequency of health events, methods for the evaluation of diagnostic tests and methods of capture-recapture for the estimation of hidden populations.
Epidemiological and biostatistical activity is oriented in particular to the following research areas: Screening on idiopathic hyposmia and on the relationship between idiopathic hyposmia and the development of Parkinson's disease; Innovative and sustainable diagnosis and management of Parkinson's disease through mHealth and ICT technologies; Prospective surveillance information system for the prevention and control of surgical site infections in cardiac surgery; Implementation of pathology registries regarding acute myocardial infarction, hemoglobinopathies and Parkinson's disease. The research activity is also oriented to the study of cardio and cerebrovascular diseases, psychiatric, tumoral, endocrinological, respiratory and clinical risk.
